Design And Development US combined-arms doctrine on the eve of World War II held that tanks should be designed to fulfill the infantry support and exploitation roles. The anti-tank warfare mission was assigned to a new branch, the tank destroyer force. Tank destroyer units were meant to counter German blitzkrieg tactics. Tank destroyer units were to be held as a reserve at the corps or army level, and were to move quickly to the site of any enemy tank breakthrough, maneuvering aggressively to destroy enemy tanks. This led to a requirement for very fast, well-armed vehicles. Though equipped with turrets unlike most self-propelled anti-tank guns of the day , the typical American design was more heavily gunned, but more lightly armored, and thus more maneuverable, than a contemporary tank. The idea was to use speed and agility as a defense, rather than thick armor, to bring a powerful self-propelled gun into action against enemy tanks. It was equipped with a 3-inch At Tank Destroyer Command request, the design was modified to give a lower silhouette and “angled hull superstructure”.

Leave a comment I have decided not to go hell for leather anymore on the British medium line. In truth I think this decision has been some time coming, but just in the last few days I have realised that constantly pushing myself down this road is likely to cause me to burn-out. Not wanting that, I have decided to let things take a back seat for a while. This is not to say that I will not pursue the British medium line, because I certainly will.
I am having far too much fun playing these tanks to abandon them altogether. I will likely still try and get over that hump, because apart from anything else it will be good to have a second Tier IX tank to go along with the ST-I. I suspect that the FV , or its successor, will end up being my second Tier X as well. I suppose it is not impossible with how things at Wargaming tend to get delayed that I might get it before the switch, but I do think it is now unlikely.

PST “Investigation of four German Panther tanks knocked out in the Malmedy area in the December breakthrough in Belgium revealed that the tanks were carefully and cleverly disguised as U. M10 gun motor carriages. After inspecting the tanks and realizing the amount of time, work, and materials involved in order to imitate the appearance of the M10, Ordnance intelligence investigators expressed the opinion that these disguised tanks, used in the proper tactical situation and at the proper time, would have caused considerable damage.
Panther mit 8,8 cm L/71 – This was the first tank they released in the new era of “preferential matchmaking is killing our matchmaker, let’s remove all pref mm tanks.” They tried to sell this piece of shit for gold when it first came out – they lowered it to gold and refunded everyone who bought it .
American soldiers usually referred to them as TDs for tank destroyer. The M36 first served combat in Europe in September , and served until the end of the war; it also served during the Korean War and in the armies of several other countries. With the advent of heavy german armor such as the Panther and Tiger, the standard U. This was foreseen, however and in September American engineers had begun designing a new tank destroyer armed with the m3 90 mm gun.
This was several months before any Western Allied unit encountered a Tiger in combat as the British First Army in Tunisia was the first western Allied unit to encounter the Tiger 1 in the lead up to the Battle of the Kasserine Pass at the start of , and well over a year before any US unit encountered a Panther in combat. After testing, an order for was issued.
Like all US tank destroyers, the turret was open-topped to save weight and provide better observation. Postwar, a folding armored roof kit was developed to provide some protection from shell fragments, as with the M The M36 had a large bustle at the rear of its turret which provided a counterweight for the main gun. Eleven additional rounds of ammunition were stored inside the counterweight. It was not until September that the vehicle first began to appear in the European Theater of Operations.
About 1, M36s were produced during the war. The need for 90 mm gunned tank destroyers was so urgent that, during October-December , conversions of standard medium tank M4A3 hulls were produced by Grand Blanc Arsenal. These vehicles designated M36B1 were rushed to the European Theater of Operations and used in combat alongside standard M36s.

Not just ammo, I mean sure, thousands of rounds of MG ammo and over main gun rounds on late model Shermans, but even after the crew had packed all that stuff in, there was still a hell of a lot of other stuff they carried around. The tank had everything it needed to be maintained by the men it was issued to, including manuals, and a limited number of common spare parts for certain components and as much gear the tankers could accumulate to make their lives easier strapped on outside too.
A chart from the M3 Lee manual, TM showing the internal ammo layout There are at least 61 hand tools used for maintaining the tanks automotive components. Most of these tools were stored in a tool bag behind the driver. Some items like the non-magnetic screwdriver for adjusting the compass were stored in brackets on or near the device they were specifically for. The oiler was mounted on a bracket by the assistant driver. He probably used it a lot. The huge track adjusting wrench and all the pioneer tools were mounted on the hull on the outside of the Sherman with the foot long tow cable.
The tanks weapons, including the main gun, also has a bunch of tools specific to them, also stored in the tank. These included combination wrenches and other special tools to maintain the machine guns, and an eye bolt and breach removing tool for the main gun adding between 6 and 10 more tools. These tools were stored in a toolbox or a spare parts box.
The grease gun, or gun lubricating, was mounted on the right rear lower hull, under the turret basket. It had an extension hose stored with it, and probably tubes of grease.

Nov 23, · Example: The Panther’s 75mm KwK 42 L/70 should be able to overpenetrate the M3 Lee, one shot Sherman and fully disable the M4A3E8 Sherman (Easy Eight) with one shot. It’s not because of the shell’s size but at the sheer velocity of the Panther’s gun.
It saw action on both the Eastern and Western fronts, and is widely hailed as one of the best tanks designed and produced during the conflict. They proved to be extremely popular, and as a result more than Panthers were built for the German military. More surprisingly, however, is the fact that nine of these tanks were built by the British Army between and This alone is a testament to the high quality of these remarkable war machines.
There were also the artillery spotter, recovery, and Commander versions. The Panther was originally meant to weigh 30 tons, but the Nazi Leader demanded extra armor and a heavier gun and so it ended up weighing almost 50 tons. The project was quietly cancelled in mid Although weighing a great deal, they could still move at a considerable pace.

This KV-1 introduces a new armament, the ZiS-5, that has a much stronger punch than the L from its predecessor while retaining the same armour. The main purpose, usage and tactics recommendations General play style The KV-1 ZiS-5 plays like a standard heavy tank, with heavy armour able to soak up shells while angled and a decent 76 mm gun to fire back.
While mobility is not the greatest, it is sufficient to get up to the front lines in time for the battle. Compared to its predecessors, the KV-1 ZiS-5 serves as a continuation rather than a big improvement, with the ZiS-5 gun the KV-1S had while sacrificing mobility or more armour. Vehicle characteristics This tank is very similar to its predecessors, but mounts the same gun of the T sharing its ability to fire APCR shells. The player should feel at home once going through the KV-1 L , and while not as fast as the KV-1S , it maintains more armour all-around.

Dragon’s new Ersatz M10 is a replica of these rare beasts and Cookie Sewell gave me his sample to build. The kit contains a basic Panther Ausf. G, though I have built the Tamiya version. I was very pleasantly surprised by the Dragon Panther kit both in terms of the excellent detail and the ease of assembly. While the Dragon kit is no Tamiya “shake-and-bake”, the fit was generally excellent throughout, although extremely complicated due to the sheer number of parts. I was also pleasantly surprised at how easily the “Smart Tracks” went together, especially compared to my more frequent experience with Dragon individual link Sherman track!
