Winding gently through one of the most beatiful river valleys in British Columbia, the Slocan Valley Rail Trail offers easy access to 50 km of breath taking scenery. Trail Highlights and Developments: The forest industry and farming also played an important role in the economy of the Valley and still do so today, though to a lesser extent. Throughout the Slocan Valley there are abundant signs of Aboriginal occupation and ancient forests dating back thousands of years. Massive railroad development flourished in the Slocan Valley region through the s and s as the drive to access huge deposits of gold, silver, lead and copper drove competing rail companies to jockey for the prime positions. The Canadian Pacific Railway CPR reacted swiftly by obtaining charters for several railways, to enable ore to be taken out of the Kootenays to the main line of the CPR which lay to the north. Unfortunately, the smelter could not be maintained and was eventually closed. The last train travelled the Slocan Valley rail line on September 14, The CPR then abandoned the line.

Fur Trade In a surprising urn from most HBC forts, and despite having several first nations members on the team which originally travelled to the site and established the fort, the occupants of Fort Langley were weary of the local indigenous people and would only allow those who were actually visibly carrying furs in through the gate. Even those who worked exclusively with the HBC and Fort Langley were required to live in a camp located a short distance away which was established for this purpose.
There have been several theories put forward as to why this might have been: The suspicious treatment of the indigenous people by the Europeans at Fort Langley may have also understandably made them less eager to trade. Fort Langley as it looked in Since it was located on the northern boundary of the Oregon Territory in the United States and in direct path of the Fraser Canyon gold rush, it quickly became the staging point for prospectors as they began heading up the canyon towards the gold fields and, as a result, saw a drastic amount of growth.

I never realized that the water ran so deep. Perhaps the bridge was in the wrong place on December 30th. Although a man lost his life somewhere in between, the exact circumstances portrayed in the Grand Forks Gazette appeared to me unsubstantial. After hearing about the call, I was determined to find eye-witnesses. I soon discovered there had been five witnesses, three of whom seemed traumatized.
Recounted to me was a rescue attempt being mobilized at the edge of the frozen river, planning to utilize a forty-foot rope and a flat-bottomed sled to be commandeered by a lightweight individual; then, promptly disallowed by attending law enforcement with threats of arrest obstruction: The outcome was depressing. Nothing could be done but watch the man eventually drown.
Under what circumstances could there have been a more positive consequence here? Is there any flexibility allowed to officers in such a situation? Was the order given based on rigid protocol?

The Kootenays A couple of years ago my family and I took a trip to the Kootenays. I had just started my book on the history of a World War I historic landmark called Shaughnessy Hospital on the other side of the province, in Vancouver. I was convinced its story epitomized the grandeur of British Columbia’s heritage. Yet I had read about places in the Kootenays that had worked in concert with Shaughnessy to provide rehabilitation for Canada’s returning wounded.
I was fascinated by these stories; I knew they exemplified real heroism. Transporting the materials necessary to construct a medical facility adequate to the needs of the returning veteran was one thing. Caring for the veterans in these remote areas took dedication. What I did not realize until I had visited the Kootenays, was that these obstacles were a well known matter of history. Gold prospectors had populated the area less than 50 years before. Places like Kaslo and New Denver were forged out of adversity and the optimism of a dream.
These communities knew a great deal about the price of sacrifice and recovery. Although I did not have a chance to view the old convalescent homes I had read about, I came away with an even better understanding of BC’s history – and the spectacular beauty of the Kootenays.

Luna Bed and Breakfast Grand Forks, BC. Located in Grand Forks, Luna Bed and Breakfast is a 1-minute drive from Gem Theatre and 7 minutes.
It climbs m over 3km, with not a single switchback. Plan for 3 hours up, 2. Due to limited use and zero maintenance by park staff, some areas are becoming overgrown, but the route is very well tagged. The views of Christina Lake are stunning, and the destination lake is pretty, but not a must-see by any means. The beach at this end of Christina Lake has a great forest service Rec site with outhouse, picnic tables and fire pits.
The trail begins at Troy Creek rec site, in the far west corner where the forest begins in earnest. It climbs immediately and steeply until reaching the lowest of the rock bluffs, providing a nice teaser view of the lake. It continues more moderately along the bluff, and then turns sharply into the trees and continues its no-nonsense ascent to a second rocky area with even better views of the lake.
Here, the route remains exposed for a time, as the trail, still steep, clambers along and around the rock face. It appears that the summit looms just above you, but when you arrive, you find that the trail cuts sharply left into a gully, on its way to the next ascent. As the trail drops a little into the cool forest and evens out, it is plagued by shrubbery and brambles, but is still discernible.

North Ossetia, where most Ossetian speakers reside, refers to the Republic of North Ossetia—Alania, an autonomous region within Russia. The political status of South Ossetia has been in dispute since the territorial conflict with Georgia during The Ossetians are the descendants of the Alans , nomadic warriors and pastoralists first attested historically during the first millennium AD.
Through nomadism and conquest they spread throughout Europe, reaching as far as China and North Africa. The Alans experienced a sharp decline in numbers and power when they were overrun by the Huns in AD. Their descendants have existed since then as a smaller population with a highly distinct culture in the Caucasus. The resulting Cyrillic alphabet has been in more or less constant, if sometimes limited, use since then, although at times Ossetian has also been written with Latin and Georgian alphabets.
Among living languages, Ossetian groups together with Yaghnobi, Pashto, the Pamir languages and Wakhi within the Eastern Iranian branch.
